Lake Borgne Lighthouse, Mississippi c. 1889 – image: 13 x 17

Officially listed as the Lake Borgne Lighthouse, this beacon was known to the local watermen as the St. Joe Light. It was built in 1889 as a replacement for an earlier light that had been swallowed up by mud on the near by St. Joseph Island. The combination residence and tower lasted until 1906, when the great hurricane of that year battered them to pieces. Rebuilt after the storm the lighthouse was finally abandoned in 1937.
