Cape Henry Lighthouse, Virginia Beach, Virginia c. 1870 – image: 10 x 10

Standing on the point where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape Henry Lighthouse is the oldest on the bay. The original structure built in 1792 was a 90 foot tall sandstone tower with fish oil lamps. In 1870 a series of large cracks appeared in its walls, raising concern about the tower’s longevity, so the decision was made to build a new lighthouse 100 yards to the southeast. The painting seen above is today’s lighthouse made of cast-iron and still flashing its signal every twenty seconds.
